Ibiza is the smallest of the main Balearic islands, 'discovered' by artists and hippies in the 1960's. It is an island of contrasts, where, away from the well-known clubbing scene it offers tranquillity and charm. In the heart of the countryside traditional island life goes on unchanged, as it has done for centuries. It has a hilly terrain, dotted with fig, olive and almond trees, whitewashed villages, and pine woods and hundreds of miles of unspoilt coastline with many little dirt tracks (usually known only to locals) leading down to secluded coves where some of the most beautiful beaches and tranquil waters can be found. It is also a nature lover's paradise; one of its nature reserves Ses Salines being of great ecological importance and providing a nesting area for many species of migratory birds. The highest point on the island is Sa Talaissa, where from its summit there are wonderful views over Ibiza's south coast. The main resorts in Ibiza range from the infamous San Antonio to family resorts such as Portinatx and Port de Sant Miguel in the north, Santa Eulalia in the east and Figueretas which lies close to the capital of the island, Ibiza Town, one of the most attractive and cosmopolitan ports in the Mediterranean. In the summer months it is a bustling place which attracts all sorts of people who come to soak up its vibrant atmosphere with many shops and street stalls staying open until well after midnight.
